Rhonda's Bits of Glass

I was born and raised in rural Nebraska. I am a full time glass artist. I moved to England in 1994. I loved visiting castles and seeing all of the beautiful historic buildings and countryside. In 1997, I moved to Minot, North Dakota. It was there, that I began working with stained glass. In 2008, I moved back to Nebraska. I started fused glass in 2014 after my daughter had taken some artVenture programs through Girl Scouts.

I always had a love for glass art, in any form. I love the way the light catches it and spreads colors across the room, or how pieces can brighten up a dull garden. I started out as a basic fuser, but soon found a passion for creating realistic glass paintings using powdered glass and various sizes of crushed glass to create the illusion of depth in my art pieces. The process is called sgraffito and it involves the use of various tools to remove the powdered glass to show the lighter areas and add powder to create the darker shading of the pieces. I also found that I enjoyed making mandalas using powdered glass. It is a process similar to what the Tibetan Monks use for their sand mandalas; however the glass versions are processed in the kiln to become permanent pieces of art.

Many of my pieces go through multiple firings in the kiln to achieve the final product. My styles vary from creating serene, peaceful art, to creating whimsical glass art for both the home and garden. I also enjoy creating functional art pieces that can be used every day such as bowls, cheeseboards and trays. I am continually learning new techniques which allow me to blend bits and pieces from various techniques to create unique pieces of art.
